Public Service Media (PSM)’s Managing Director, Ahmed Shakeeb, has stated that the role of Television Maldives (TVM) in strengthening national unity has been vital, as the public broadcaster celebrates its 48th anniversary. TVM is a subsidiary of PSM.
To commemorate the occasion, the three most senior officials from PSM’s management took part in a morning programme produced by the broadcaster, where they conveyed their messages to mark the milestone. The programme featured Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb, Chairperson Aminath Namza, and Deputy Managing Director Abdulla Yamin. During the programme, all three officials highlighted key achievements of PSM over the past 48 years, emphasising that each success has been driven by the dedication and hard work of its staff.
Managing Director Shakeeb noted that when TVM was first introduced in 1978, it was the first broadcaster in the region to offer colour programming. He also reflected on the transition from radio to television, explaining that TVM successfully transformed important information previously delivered via radio into engaging television content, producing programmes that captured the public’s imagination through both entertainment and practical value.
He further emphasised that the broadcaster’s consistency has been built on public trust, which has remained strong over the years. This trust, he said, has enabled TVM to play a significant role in strengthening public unity.
Chairperson Aminath Namza stated that, as a public broadcaster, PSM does not seek to compete with other media outlets. She added that all programmes broadcast on TVM adhere strictly to established guidelines and standards. She also highlighted the transformative impact TVM has had on broadcasting, bringing meaningful improvements for viewers.
Deputy Managing Director Abdulla Yamin commended the tireless efforts of PSM employees, noting that the broadcaster’s greatest achievement over the past 48 years has been the unity and collaboration demonstrated by its workforce. He added that, in response to changing times, TVM staff have continuously adapted to ensure the delivery of relevant and high-quality content.
Although a number of events have been planned to mark the anniversary, the management has assured that the contributions of all employees will be recognised. They also affirmed their commitment to further developing the workforce in positive ways. The management concluded by noting that the exemplary service of every employee has been a key factor in maintaining the broadcaster’s quality over the years.
